Cinnamon zeylanicum (Cinnamon)

Most popular spice, used as flavouring agent in baking and other food applications. Cinnamon tree is native to Sri Lanka and the Southern part of India and has been used in traditional medicine to heal respiratory, digestive, and gynaecological ailments. Two types of cinnamon varieties are available: Ceylon cinnamon, also known as Cinnamomum verum (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), and Cassia cinnamon, or Cinnamomum cassia. Cinnamon is obtained from inner bark of the tree and contains an oil called cinnamaldehyde which is responsible for the distinct sweet and spicy smell and flavour as well as medicinal properties.

Health benefits

  • Cinnamon has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and is used for the management of diabetes, reducing blood cholesterol levels, and treat gastrointestinal problems.
  • Cinnamon helps to reduce spikes in blood sugar level after a meal. Cinnamon inhibits enzymes required to break down complex sugar molecules from food before they can be absorbed and thus helps to reduce blood sugar level. Cinnamon is also known to reduce insulin resistance and thus help to reduce blood sugar levels.

Dose

Cinnamon powder has been safely used at dosages of 1 to 3 g/day in humans.
