Anthraquinones of Senna has a strong laxative effect by causing irritation in the wall of the colon as well as inducing colon contractions and bowel movements. Senna helps to retain water and electrolytes in the intestine and thus increasing the amount of fluid in the intestines.
  • Colonoscopy Prep: Senna is used to clean the colon prior to a colonoscopy.
  • Skin Health: Essential oils and tannins present in senna leaves help to alleviate skin inflammation.

Dose

15-30 mg of dry powder is used to treat general constipation.  Around 2 grams of crushed senna leaf or pod is used as tea in hot water.
