Andrographis paniculata (Kalmegh)

Also known as the king of bitters, Andrographis is an annual herb native to Asia and widely cultivated. Traditionally used to treat upper respiratory infections and infectious diseases including common cold, diarrhoea and fever.  The aerial part or the whole plant contains a phytoactive known as andrographolide which is responsible for medicinal properties.

Health benefits

  • Andrographis has anti-inflammatory activities and has been used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis with improvement in swollen joints and mobility.
  • The extract of Andrographis is known to improve cough and sore throat and reduce fever and pain due to tonsilitis.
  • Found to be effective against inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis) when administered orally for 8 weeks.

Dose

Andrographis is used at a dose of 90-600 mg daily for up to 12 weeks for effective health benefits.
